Fixing P4G Chie Voices Mod

Post by Qlonever » Sun Oct 27, 2019 2:55 pm

Hey all, I'm just taking this thread over here from the old forum to continue working on it.

I've completed the entirety of P4 with the mod enabled, and here is the complete list of bugs I found:
Spoiler
Show
- 4/15 Talking with Chie & Yosuke by the stairwell: Voice clips out of sync

- 5/5 Talking with Nanako & Dojima: Voice clips out of sync

- Kou Ichijo social link rank 1: Wrong voice clips

- 6/19 Watching TV with Nanako: Voice clips out of sync

- Game crashes while loading 3F of Marukyu Striptease regardless of whether or not the cutscene on that floor has already been triggered, does not happen with clean ISO

- Chie social link rank 2: Wrong voice clips (Can't confirm, I had my volume down during this scene)

- Naoki Konishi social link rank 1: Wrong voice clips

- Sayoko Uehara social link rank 1: Wrong voice clips

- Nanako social link rank 7: Wrong voice clips

- Nanako social link rank 8: Wrong voice clips

- Chie social link rank 8: Old voice clips?

- 9/7 Morning conversation with Kanji and Yosuke: Voice clips out of sync

- 9/12 Lunchtime invitation from Ayane: Wrong voice clips

- 10/20 Evening cutscene with Nanako: Voice clips out of sync

- 10/27 Lunchtime cutscene on rooftop: Old voice clips

- Chie social link rank 10: Voice clips out of sync

- 10/31 Evening cutscene with Nanako: a message box doesn't appear when it's supposed to, causing the game to lock up

- Sayoko Uehara social link rank 10: Voice clips out of sync

- Naoto social link rank 5: Wrong voice clips

- Shu Nakajima social link rank 1: Wrong voice clips

- 11/21 Visiting Nanako: Voice clips out of sync

- 12/03 Asking Adachi where Namatame's room is: Old voice clips

- 12/03 Outside Namatame's room: Voice clips out of sync

- Naoto social link rank 10: Wrong voice clips

- Yosuke social link rank 9: Voice clips out of sync

- Celebrating after defeating Ameno-Sagiri: Old voice clips

- 3/20 meeting with Margaret: Voice clips out of sync
The vast majority of these bugs are found within social links, and all of the voice clips used during social links are stored within COMMU.AFS. While looking through Chie's voice clips in that file, I found two pairs of duplicate voice clips. I think there's a chance that these are the culprits of all of the out-of-sync voice clips that play one line later than they're supposed to during social links. I also found a handful of un-updated Chie voice clips. Here are my findings:

^^^ OLD VOICE CLIPS
Based on the bugs and the corresponding files, it looks like the game doesn't select voice clips based on their name inside the file, but rather their index.

I think I've found the corresponding file error for every bug I encountered, though I'll probably want to go through COMMU.AFS more extensively some other time.

There were also a number of AFS files in the mod patch that correspond to cutscenes that don't even have Chie in them. I've noted those within my findings.

Two AFS files within the mod have all of the correct ADX files as well as all of the ADX files from an entirely different AFS file. I don't remember there being any issues with the corresponding cutscenes, but it seems weird and it should probably be fixed.

For some reason, V375001.AFS crashes DkZ studio whenever I try to open it. It doesn't crash the game when loaded, but it's still missing an ADX file that causes the voices to mess up.

As for the Nanako text box bug, I think that was a one-time fluke and not an issue with the mod since I reloaded my save and it didn't happen again. (EDIT: This is actually caused by the method I'm using to load the game. I'm using an ethernet connection to my PC, so whenever my CPU is overloaded, the game can't load very well.)

As for V248001.AFS, I don't know what's wrong with it. It contains all of the voice clips for the cutscene that plays on 3F of Marukyu Striptease, so it has to be responsible for the crashing somehow. I originally thought it was because the filesizes were too big, but then I realized that all of the changed AFS files were like that and every other one didn't have a problem. Every .adx file is present and correctly named inside of the modded V248001.AFS file, so I don't know what's causing the crashes. The game consistently crashes on 3F when using a modded ISO, but not when using an unmodded ISO, so I'm fairly certain it has something to do with the mod. Any ideas, anyone? (EDIT: I completely remade this AFS file, and now it doesn't crash the game. I'll chalk it up to an error when the original modded file was made.)

Another interesting tidbit I learned while snooping around the files: Those cutscenes where some shadowy person is walking around the foggy shopping district at night actually have voice acting, but it just isn't used. I guess it was changed last minute to make it less obvious who it is, since it's pretty easy to tell from the voice clips.

I just realized I put this in the wrong category. It should be in P4 modding, not P4G modding. Sorry.

Update: I've gone into the mod files and fixed every single error listed here, and I'll do a second playthrough to test it. Also, I made sure that none of Teddie's voice lines got replaced with his new VA from P4G, just for consistency's sake.

I'm super impressed by the dedication it must've taken to identify all the issues and fix them, I could never find the time to do it (or test the mod this in depth, shamefully) so I appreciate it very much. I'll happily update the download and credit you for the update whenever you're ready!

No problem! To be honest, I just have such an intense hatred for Chie's original voice acting that I refuse to play the game without Erin Fitzgerald's voice lines.

Once I finish my second playthrough and make sure there aren't any crashes/unchanged lines/other mistakes I'll send it your way.

I finished my second playthrough, and everything seems to be in order. Here's a link to the files the Mod Compendium uses to rebuild the CVM:

I haven't changed anything in the mod.xml, so change that however you want.

I'm having a problem with the mod compendium and Chie's voice mod. I assume it's with Chie's voice mod because I built an ISO in MC with it and the anime cutscene mod, and all that's taking effect is the anime cutscene mod. Chie's voice is still the same as usual. When I try to build in the first place, I get an error; "String was not recognized as a valid boolean." What's going on there? I already deleted the ZZZZZ.BIN file from within P4's files before trying it.

Oh no, sounds like some kind of glitch... If you don't see the mod mentioned at all in the log at the bottom when you build, chances are it's not actually getting enabled. What are the full error details if you can post them?

The only time I can think of that a string is converted to a boolean for the Mod Compendium is when it's reading from the xml files, you could try deleting all of those from the Config folder and relaunching the program. It'll give it a chance to rewrite whatever's wrong with them

I couldn't find anywhere to post this so I came here. I'm having trouble installing the Time To Make History mod. Is there a README or something similar I could follow? I'm pretty new to this, and want to use that mod but there aren't any guides.

there are some methods

you could try this one. Pretty easy, but watch the entire video:

or this one (the one I used. But is a more outdated version):

or even, replacing the adx audio file inside the iso yourself. But that's harder than what it should be. So stick with one of the first two methods

edit: I just got started on this whole modding thing too. The part of just adding mods made here is easy. But I had a headache at first too. I tried installing the same mod as you when I made my first playthrough of P4, along with P4G Chie Voice mod. But I had no success after many tries, so I gave up. Now on my NG+ I decided to try again and got it, both mods working perfectly. Also learning know how to put my own stuff inside the game. This website is pretty useful. I had no idea so many people were into Persona and SMT modding
